What Happened to Animas?

What Happened to Animas?

Today we’re going to answer what is probably the most frequent question on our Discord server and social media: What happened to Animas? When is Animas coming out? Did you abandon Animas?

For those who lack the context: Animas is our second project announced on Steam, following the launch of our first video game, Mechanophagia. We started working on Animas in late 2024 and, although our initial plan was to release it around March or April 2025, that target kept moving further away as we realized just how complex the project we had envisioned really was. It wasn’t until October 2025 that we were able to release the demo; a demo that, we must admit, is all that exists of Animas so far.

The demo launch reached far beyond anything we could have imagined. Some of the biggest streamers in Venezuela and Spanish-speaking countries played it, helping put our studio on the map, especially in our home country. But while the demo was an undeniable success, demos are free, which means our pockets didn’t see a single cent from all that momentum. After the financial struggle of our first game and almost a year invested in developing Animas, we desperately needed a short-term income stream, and the full release of Animas was still far off. That’s why we made the decision to pause its development and create a brand-new game: The Last Cat in the Universe (TLCITU).

Later on, we’ll share the full story behind the development and reception of TLCITU, but the summary is that it did quite well. We finally published a game that turned out to be a commercial success (for us, at our scale). Not only did it make up for the six months we spent building it, but it also provided us with enough budget and financial peace of mind to take on our next project.

And that’s where the inevitable question comes up: Is that next game going to be Animas?

The short answer is no: Animas will not be our next game.

This is a decision we’ve been pondering and discussing as a team for months, and we believe it’s the right one. Animas—or what we truly want Animas to become—remains a huge and complex project. Even though we now have more experience and resources, we feel we’re still not ready to do it justice. Restarting work on Animas right now would mean risking another pause if we run out of funds again or hit technical roadblocks we aren’t yet equipped to solve.

To make Animas the game it deserves to be, we need to keep learning and growing. But make no mistake: we are going to make Animas. When? We don’t know for sure yet, but it will happen.

In the meantime, we will continue making other games that we feel better prepared to execute. And we don’t want anyone to feel (as we know some did with TLCITU) that these other titles are “secondary” or games we make just for cash. We put all our effort and heart into every game we produce; we want each one to connect deeply with players, and we would never consider any project “minor.” They are simply smaller or more focused games that allow us to finish them in less time, but we firmly believe every single one is an essential piece of the universe we are building.

What will Apamate Studio’s next game be, then? Well, that’s a question for another day… but you’ll find out very soon.
